From midnight last night, the European Commission became illegal
As of midnight last night, the terms of 26 European Commissioners expired. Of the 27-strong college, only one, President José Manuel Durão Barroso, has been reappointed. The others, on any conceivable reading of the rules, are now occupying their posts illicitly.
Why is the EU, yet again, disregarding its own rules of procedure? Because the composition of the Commission would be altered by the European Constitution (a.k.a. Lisbon Treaty), and Eurocrats were reluctant to go through an appointments procedure under the existing rules.
More explanation in Daniel Hannan’s blog.

Albion Alliance
The Albion Alliance is a UK wide, cross-party umbrella group for those opposed to our membership of the EU and our loss of a voice in our own affairs.
We are putting pressure on each MP and PPC, asking if they agree to our pledge and requesting their response on that. We are publishing replies as they come in and are being subject to a go-slow from many MPs.
We are asking all of our signatories to put pressure on their local MP and PPCs, as well as writing to their local papers about the Alliance’s Pledge and any similar organizations.
We would see AA as not in any way alone and “doing their own thing” but joining in with and promoting Dan Hannan’s and Douglas Carswell’s Plan as well as supporting the TPA in this matter. We’ll put you in the sidebar as well.
That Pledge:
I pledge to work tirelessly to give the voters of my constituency a democratic and direct voice in the United Kingdom’s continued relationship with the EU.
I pledge that I will support any motion for a referendum on that continued relationship, and to vote positively for any Private Members Bill that may call for such a referendum, written in clear concise terms, irrespective of Party Whip and to promote the same, with a view to the successful outcome of this pledge within 1 year of a new Parliament or sooner.
We hope that you will also become signatories as the opposition to Europe is at this moment too fragmented to make a huge difference.
