Statement from the executive board of The People’s Movement against the EU in Denmark

The People’s Movement against the EU finds it reprehensible that the Danish Government wants to put pressure on the Icelandic population by threatening to withdraw Danish loan offers, if Icelanders say “no” to pay 27 billion kroner (4 billion euro) to the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

It is unfair that Iceland’s population should pay an amount to cover the reckless borrowing that people in these countries have recorded in Icelandic banks. Denmark must therefore act to ensure that the British and the Dutch government cover the losses themselves. This applies all the more so as the British government during his time even recommended municipalities to incorporate Icelandic loans.

As the British newspaper Financial Times writes in an editorial on 7th January, the amount is of a negligible size for the two large countries, whereas it would be a disaster for Icelanders to pay it.

I am in the US but I and many others here see this as another bailout to the bankers being put on the already burdened backs of the people. Have courage. Do not pay the bankers debts. Let them go after the high level bankers and the high level government officials who colluded with them for fraud, freeze the bankers assets and return those assets to the rightful owners.

Declaration of Iceland’s legal cause

The Icesave quarrel is an issue of law and justice. The Government of Iceland made a grave mistake by admitting a dispute over a private bank to develop into political and international negotiations. Right from the establishment of Alþingi in the year of 930, the national pride and honour of the Icelandic people has demanded that disputes should be settled by law and justice. The Icesave branches of Landsbanki were operated under undisputed rules of law and the Icelandic nation has unalienable rights, that the authorities guard the interests which they are chosen to watch over, with only the intent of honour and dignity of the general public in mind.

National Honour – Coalition Against Icesave, refuses to accept that the Icelandic public will be forced to bear heavy loads of debt, which had its origins in operations of the Icesave branches of Landsbanki. Neither the Constitution of the Republic of Iceland nor regulations of the European Union allow any such economic burdens. National Honour maintains that there are no pretences for state guaranties of private debts, neither of Landsbanki nor other companies. It is of paramount importance to follow up on the goodwill that the nation enjoys abroad, in order to advance the honest and just cause of Iceland.

The sovereignity of the Icelandic nation has never been handed over to the Government of the country and National Honour will not tolerate to have the Constitution mistreated in any such disgraceful manner. National Honour refuses to give away any rights or to submit to the claims of old colonial powers. No ideas of surrender to unjust and illegal demands of Britain and the Netherlands will be tolerated. National Honour will forcefully oppose such treason.

Deklaration om Islands målsättning

Icesave grälet gäller lag och rättvisa. Islands regering har gjort ett allvarligt misstag genom att lova en tvist över en privat bank, att utvecklas till politiska och internationella förhandlingar. Nationell stolthet och ära av det isländska folket från inrättandet av Alþingi i år 930, har krävt att tvister bör lösas genom lag och rättvisa. Icesave filialerna av Landsbanki är regulerade av obestridda rättsregler och det isländska folket har de omistliga rättigheter, att myndigheterna skyddar de intressen som de valts att vaka över, med det endaste syfte att handla med ära och värdighet för allmänheten i åtanke.

Nationell Heder – Koalitionen Mot Icesave, vägrar att acceptera att den isländska allmänheten kommer att tvingas att bära tunga laster av skulder, som har sitt ursprung i operationer av Landsbanki Icesave filialer. Varken konstitution av Island eller förordningar i Europeiska Unionen tillåta några sådana ekonomiska bördor. Nationell Heder hävdar att det finns ingen förutsätning för statliga garantier av skulder av privata företag, vare sig det handlar om Landsbanki eller andra. Av yttersta vikt är att följa upp den goodwill som på utländska mark har utvecklats imot vårt folk, till att vidarebefordra Islands ärliga och rättferdiga sak.

Suveränitet av den isländska nationen har aldrig överlämnats till regeringen av Island och Nationell Heder accepterar inte att konstitutionen kommer att behandlas på ett så skamligt sätt. Nationell Heder vägrar att ge bort några rättigheter eller att lämna in fordringar av gamla kolonialmakter. Inga idéer om oppgevande för urättvisa och ulagliga krav från Storbritannien och Nederländerna kommer att tolereras. Nationell Heder kommer att kraftfullt motsätte sig sådana förräderi.
